Jesus Is (series)

Ego Eimi means "I Am" in Greek, Jesus uses this term over and over again throughout the gospels. This is Jesus referencing The Divine Name from Exodus 3:14, where the God of the burning bush answers Moses' question about his name. In the Septuagint (LXX) we read, Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ὤν, "I am who I am" or “I exist because I exist” and so while God calls himself "ehyeh" which means "I Exist" or "I Am" Moses said "yahweh" which means "He Exists", which because God's Name is a VERB and not a noun, that makes sense. And so Jesus is Identifying Himself with God, not by saying "He Is", but by saying "I Am"

This is most clear here in John 8:55, "Jesus said to them, 'I tell you the truth, before Abraham came to be, I am!'”

But Jesus also used the term figuratively, as when He said He is Light, He didn't mean actual photons and light beams, He meant figuratively He brings people to understanding, and away from evil, and I think the best way to make things stick in your brain is to personalize it, so in this case we will say "Jesus Is"
